Stephanie Kennan

In this first instalment of Digital Marketers Q&A, I sat down with Stephanie Kennan, President of Bang Marketing, a Montreal-based agency specializing on B2B. Stephanie is everywhere in Montreal! She is a public speaker, wrote the book (French) Mon site Web chez le psy, blogs on LesAffaires.com and was Honorary President of the Email Marketing Conference by LesAffaires.com.

Smart, charismatic, results driven. I could not have chosen a better person to start this series of interviews aimed at discovering what marketers think and love.

About Digital Marketing

What has changed the most for marketers in the last decade?

Everything is still changing. It’s not about what was then and what is now. Perpetual change is the new reality. Marketers need to specialize in order to be great at what they do today, there is too much stuff going on at the same time!

What do you foresee over the next 10 years?

We will see almost every business moving online. No industry is protected. Even pharmacists are going online for real now.  The «corporate unions» are protesting in a very pathetic way, trying to protect their own interests rather than the patient’s wallet… But it won’t stop the shift. We have been talking about it for 20 years, but it’s happening for real right now and it’s changing consumers’ habits for good. There is no turning back!

If you had to explain digital marketing to an 8 year old, how would you do it ?

My son Alex is 8 years old and it’s fascinating how they understand technology quickly. He would tell you that digital marketing makes the things he loves more accessible to him.

What are your thoughts about email and email marketing?

I work in B2B Marketing so email is still number one on my list. Email is still great to reach a business audience. ROI is close to 40 to 1… Social Media can’t beat that!  Millennials don’t use email as we do though… They will prefer Messaging apps. It doesn’t mean email is dead. Not in B2B. Yet…

Just for Fun

How would you describe our era?

Crazy Fast

Your favourite book?

I love Herman Hesse’s “Demian. The story revolves around the struggle of a young man between two worlds: that of superficiality and illusion, and that of spiritual truth and reality.

Your favorite blog and/or must follow Twitter?

I love Disabled link David Baker, a consultant from Nashville who once owned a marketing firm and is now blogging about how to run an agency. He’s just great!

If you could chose your final meal, what would it be?

Any cheese, any kind of cheese!

If you were all mighty, what would you change in the World?

Just get rid of Trump. Please.

Thoughts For the Future

What advice would you give to a 20 year old student today?

Stop school and try it on your own. Open a business. Struggle a little. Then you can go back do whatever you want in school.

What trends should we be watching ?

I think we will have to closely watch technology dependence as a serious problem in the years to come. I am worried about my own behaviours. About my son’s behaviours. Doing nothing is good for the soul. Just being able to disconnect. But it’s getting harder and harder.

Your Business

What does your business do and why?

We’ll put it to you straight: our house specialty is getting results. At Bang Marketing, we speak your language: increased sales, brand recognition, client retention, and more. It’s no surprise that our clients recommend us as the leading B2B marketing agency in Montreal.

What angers you about your industry?

The marketing industry is the Far West. Anybody can claim anything. I sometimes think that a Professional Order would help.

What drives you?

Excellence and Fun. These two values drive my business. It’s as simple as that!
